from isis the scientist we find a discussion of a “humorous” piece that was published in the prestigious* journal nature. the piece includes such enlightening and chuckle-inducing prose as this:

yes yes, we know that it’s meant to be satire. but it’s the same kind of humor that is found in jokes that begin “i’m not a racist, but…”
it makes me so very angry, in particular because i’m so fed up with the sexism i’ve been facing lately at work. i don’t understand why my work has to be 10dB better than my male counterparts’ work to get the same recognition. i don’t understand why i have to “volunteer” to organize and plan women in engineering day (as the most senior woman engineer) while still accomplishing all of my other work, but none of my male counterparts do, and i get no compensation or recognition for it. i guess instilling inspiration into high school girls is supposed to be reward enough for a “nurturing” person like myself. i don’t know why i’m offended when i hear things like
someday, will i get to just be an engineer/scientist? someday, will the fact that i have a vagina not be such a big fucking deal?
*while i understand that publishing in nature is exceedinly difficult, i no longer have any respect for the journal.

k (male) and g (female) were talking in k’s cube about work. Douchebag with a capitol D walks up and asks if they should really be standing around “jawing.” k explains that g is helping him with some things, to which Douchebag replies:
“the words ‘she’ and ‘help’ are mutually exclusive. you just threw your credibility out the window by combining those two thoughts.”
i ask you, internets, what should i do? i want very much to report Douchebag and his d-baggery to the ethics office, but the fact is the ethics office doesn’t really do much. (everything i’ve ever reported has turned out to be “fine” or “misinterpretation” or whatevs. even when Boberto suggested we nickname the nerve stimulation project i’m working on with the acronym CLITS, he got a gentle reprimand and some one-on-one couseling by the Site Lead who is fast-tracking him to promotion.) tell me tell me tell me, what would you do, wise internets?

i’ve been working on a project with a friend for the past year or so, and on friday we went to the patent attorney to see about filing for patents. today i got a phone call that there’s a conflict because they have a client with a similar invention. i just looked up the other client’s patent application. unfortunately, AMAZINGLY similar. looks like my only hope for a way out of my stupid stupid job has died. this whiskey is not doing what i need it to.
some of the software i use requires a certain operating system on my mac. i love that i have the ability to name it. i giggle every time it starts up. :)
a few minutes ago, i was finishing up happy hour at liberty when my partner commented, “hey, isn’t that they guy from the slog?”
“DAN SAVAGE, you mean? he’s only a hero!”
yes, that’s right, dan savage was having drinks right next to me. in hindsight, i wish i’d paid for his drink. you’re my hero, dan. :)
